The Sisters of the Holy Cross operate in both Ghana and Uganda, where they engage in education, healthcare, and social outreach to serve their communities. In Uganda, their work includes founding schools and a health center, educating local sisters, and helping vulnerable groups like victims of human trafficking and war displacement. In Ghana, they run educational institutions like Our Lady of Holy Cross School in Kasoa, and also provide various forms of support through their ministries.

Our Charism

To respond to the needs of the time in today’s world through our ministries of education, health care and other pastoral services.

We are a family of Sisters brothers and priests founded by Blessed Basil Anthony Moreau in Le Mans. in France.

Our Founder

(February 11, 1799 – January 20, 1873) was the French priest who founded the Congregation of Holy Cross from which two additional congregations were founded, namely the Marianites of Holy Cross and the Sisters of the Holy Cross. Moreau was beatified on September 15, 2007 in Le Mans, France.

Early life
Basile-Antoine Moreau was born on February 11, 1799, in Laigné-en-Belin, a small village near Le Mans, the ninth of fourteen children of Louis and Louise Pioger Moreau. His father was a farmer and a wine merchant.

He grew up in the midst of the turmoil of the French Revolution. As his parents were devout Catholics involved in the underground Church, the aspect of the Revolution that most affected him was the suppression of the Church

In 1967, Bishop Vincent McCauley, CSC, second from right, Diocese of Fort Portal, asked Holy Cross sisters to come to Uganda. Left to right, Sisters M. Catherine de Ricci (Bartels), CSC, and Patricia Gantz, CSC, were the first two founding sisters for the mission. At right is Sister M. Olivette (Whalen), CSC, who accompanied them as mission coordinator.

Our History

When Sisters of the Holy Cross set foot in Uganda in 1967, they found a country of great beauty and great need. Lovely Lake Victoria graced the southern border, while misty mountains ranged along the western edge. But the country also was sloping dangerously into political corruption and civil war.

Still, the bishop of the Fort Portal diocese asked Holy Cross sisters to come and fulfill a need for education. Soon, three sisters arrived and achieved swift success with the creation of St. Maria Goretti School. Additional sisters joined them. Some were nurses who could staff hospitals as the civil war escalated. At that time of unrest, most expatriates were fleeing Uganda. In addition, the U.S. Embassy had withdrawn its diplomats. Holy Cross men and women had the option to leave too, but all stayed.
